My practice centres on figurative and still-life painting, exploring psychological and emotional states through realistic painted imagery. I work predominantly in oil, using a traditional indirect painting process of layered glazes, drawing on techniques and approaches associated with Northern Renaissance and Baroque painting.
My recent work has moved towards what I describe as atmospheric psychological realism, using contemporary subjects and situations while retaining the visual language and intensity of classical painting. I am interested in the tension between the familiar and the unsettling, and in creating images that invite contemplation rather than providing a single fixed interpretation.
