Alistair Tucker - Yeshua in Gethsemane

£350.00

Aquatint
30 x 50 x 2.5 cm
2020

The poet-priest Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote in God’s Grandeur: The world is charged with the grandeur of God. My work explores such excellence and beauty, driven by a central preoccupation with light - how it cuts through shadow, transforms form, and speaks across both physical landscapes and sacred narrative. In these intaglio prints, stark chiaroscuro becomes the primary narrative tool for exploring the Passion. Etched into deep, dark grounds, light emerges from above and within to illuminate the agonising solitude of Gethsemane, the heavy tragedy of betrayal, and the quiet dignity of Christ bearing the cross. The inherent richness, fine line work, and deep tonal range of the intaglio process mirror the emotional and spiritual gravity of scripture. Through dramatic contrast and atmospheric mark-making, these prints explore human fragility, sacred sorrow, and the silent testament of divine grace amidst darkness.
