Alex Folla, born in 1980, graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. He has specialized in the study of risparmio painting, the technique used by Italian masters of the seventeenth century, above all Caravaggio. In his work, he loves to blend the language of the past with a contemporary sensibility, combining compositions with a Renaissance and Baroque flavor with the everyday objects and imagery of the present. The core of his research is the naturalistic rendering of the human figure, with particular attention to anatomy, worked as was customary in the 1600s, using a limited palette of colors, preferably earth tones. The flesh tones, built through the risparmio technique, are concentrated in the luminous masses, rendered with a thick, impasto brushwork to heighten the three-dimensional effect for the viewer’s eye. He has held several solo exhibitions around the world, in cities including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Los Angeles, St. Louis, New Delhi, Rome, Milan, and Florence, and has taken part in art fairs including Art Basel Miami. Between 2019 and 2021, he frescoed 200 square meters of mural painting in the lobby of a hotel in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, in the heart of Milan.
