As a child in the Middle East, I saw faces and figures in the contours of hills and shadows falling on stone courtyards. I still begin by looking for what's already there. My work grows from an encounter with material: its shape, weight, and possibilities.
Stone carving is a form of listening. I follow a curve until a figure begins to emerge, leaving some surfaces rough while polishing others smooth. Years of practising and teaching yoga taught me to attend the body as a place of movement and source of life and energy. I still think about this animating spark and possibilities of creation when sculpting.
In my book and series titled FAITH I worked with found elements, exploring the point at which a humble object becomes a vessel for meaning. The act of making asks me to trust what I cannot yet see, to work with nature and trust to its higher power rather than impose myself on it.
For me, faith is an openness to that unseen possibility. I want my work to provide space for everyone to recognise their experience of hope, peace and love, regardless of their specific faith - thus highlighting our essential universality.
